The Valero Alamo Bowl was created in 1993 with the following mission statement:
To stage a premier college football game as the showcase of an annual festival of events that will bring enjoyment to South Texans, San Antonians and visitors alike while drawing positive national attention to San Antonio and supporting higher education and other worthy causes in our community.
In its 17-year history, the Valero Alamo Bowl has developed more then just record capacity crowds and top ESPN ratings. The Valero Alamo Bowl has brought national exposure and significant economic impact to San Antonio while also providing opportunities for local organizations. Organizations such as the Elf Louise Christmas Project, an all-volunteer organization who annually provied gifts to over 19,000 needy children, and The First Tee of San Antonio, a free character education program for kids that teaches values through the game of golf, have benefited from the Valero Alamo Bowl’s community outreach.
In 2008 the Valero Alamo Bowl’s “Fill the Bowl” fund-raiser helped collect 24,329 pounds of food for the San Antonio Food Bank which was enough to provide 19,000 meals for Southwest Texas families. In 2009, funds and tickets were provided to the organization. The San Antonio Food Bank fights hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education and advocacy.
In October 2009, the Valero Alamo Bowl participated in the 11th Annual Light the Night Walk in rememberance of 2008 bowl Chairman Bob Brincat who lost his courageous fight with cancer on November 13, 2008. This annual walk supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Each season Valero Alamo Bowl Board of Directors, sponsors and bowl partners underwrite game tickets to local charity organizations such as Boysville, Family Service Association, Medina Children’s Home, Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, the YMCA and the Boy Scouts (who also receives funding from the bowl for helping sell game day programs). These tickets provide opportunities for local youth and families in need to experience the excitement of college football in San Antonio. To register your non-profit as a perspective beneficiary of charity tickets, please email info@alamobowl.com.
San Antonio’s military bases are an important part of the city and its history. With four bases many have come to know San Antonio as Military City, USA. As a small token of our appreciation for their service to our country, the Valero Alamo Bowl has conducted a Military Appreciation Program since its inception in 1993 which annually allows over 2,000 military personnel and their families to attend each game on a reduced or complimentary basis.
