2014 Rudy’s Bar-B-Q Pigskin Preview Recap

Before he started his new job as a college football analyst for ESPN last weekend, Mack Brown made a stop in San Antonio to be the featured speaker at the Rudy’s Bar-B-Q Pigskin Preview Luncheon.

A record setting crowd of more than 800 college football fans, many dressed in burnt orange, occupied the Alamodome turf to hear the college football coaching legend share past stories, his thoughts on the upcoming season and getting accustomed to living a “normal life”.

Brown joked with the crowd that he was pumped to watch the movies Draft Day and Delivery Man on his flights to and from Bristol, Connecticut this past weekend.

“You can actually get out and go to a movie,” Brown said. “You can get out and walk and do some other things. I haven’t seen a movie in forever.”

In addition to his new found freedom, Brown said he is excited for the new challenge being on television will bring.

Prior to accepting the position with ESPN, Brown consulted with his good friend Urban Meyer, who also worked for ESPN in between coaching stops at the University of Florida and Ohio State University, on the in’s and out’s of television.

“He said to have fun and be yourself,” Brown said. “He said, they hired you because they want to know what you know and to tell the truth. Enjoy yourself.”

Thursday wasn’t all about what the future holds for Brown though. The former Texas head coach had the chance to reminisce on some of his most memorable road game stories and recruiting coups, including allowing Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams to keep his trademark dreadlocks.

It was clear on Thursday that Brown will always be a beloved member of the Longhorn family. But for now his focus is on the next chapter of his life. A life off of the sidelines and in the studio.
